Welcome to the Show!

Welcome Message from Megan Berti, Artistic Director

Welcome to Pagliacci, and thank you so much for spending your evening with us! I’m Megan Berti, HOPERA’s Artistic Director and the director of tonight’s production, and it means the world to have you here. Your presence and support make it possible for us to bring fresh, fun, creatively reimagined opera to Houston — performed by incredible local artists and shared in the vibrant spaces our community loves.

As we celebrate tonight’s performance, I also want to invite you to join us in giving back this season. HOPERA is re-launching our annual Giving Tuesday Caroling Campaign, a joint fundraiser benefitting Texas Children’s Hospital, supporting joy, music, and comfort for kids and families who need it most. You can also catch us again on December 19th for a special holiday edition of HOPERA Karaoke, where we’ll be raising additional funds and singing our hearts out for a great cause.

Thank you again for being part of the HOPERA family. Enjoy the show, laugh loudly, cheer boldly — and we hope to see you again very soon!

So what's this show about?

Act I

A traveling troupe of clowns rolls into town, ready to pour out some laughter for the locals. Canio, our resident “Sad Clown,” tries to keep the show on tap, but jealousy bubbles up when he suspects Nedda’s affections may be… brewing elsewhere.

Enter Silvia, Nedda’s true love — bold, spirited, and definitely not part of the evening’s scheduled six-pack of fun. Their secret romance is more dangerous than an over-carbonated keg, and Tonio, feeling rejected, decides to crack things wide open by snitching to Canio.
Cue the famous line: “Laugh, Pagliaccio” …which lands about as smoothly as flat beer.

Act II

It’s showtime! The troupe performs their silly commedia skit, but real life starts overflowing into the plot. Canio can’t keep his emotions bottled up, and the line between performance and reality starts to foam over.

When he demands Nedda reveal her lover’s name, the tension rises faster than a badly poured pint. Silvia rushes in, trying to save Nedda, but everything goes tragically off the rails.

Meet the Artistic Team!

Director

Mezzo-soprano Megan Berti is a Houston-based performer originally from California (yup, one of those!) who has sung with opera companies and orchestras from coast to coast and overseas…what an over-achiever. She sings often with Houston Grand Opera and has appeared at Opera in the Heights, Miami Lyric Opera, Painted Sky Opera, MUSIQA…the list goes on. (If you want to check out all the awesome things she’s sung and all the cool places she’s been, she’s got a website for that: www.MeganBerti.com.)

The idea for HOPERA was born from Megan’s love of opera and a passion for craft beer and liquor – they seemed like a match made in Hea–, well…Houston! I mean really, what could be a better pairing with craft opera than craft drink? Okay, craft cheese would be pretty great…but let’s be honest, there’s plenty of cheese in opera! And Houston, with its thriving community of artists and small businesses, is the perfect home for fine (if often cheesy) opera served with delicious small-batch beverages. Megan believes that opera is for everyone, that there’s an opera for everyone out there, and that it should be enjoyed with good friends and a glass (or two) of the good stuff! Cheers to you, and cheers to us, and we look forward to making Hopera a part of Houston!

Production Manager, Lighting, Artist Liaison

Rene Salazar is a violinist by trade, serving as principal violist of the Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet orchestras since 2004. He loves playing chamber music and long walks on the beach, but is also an avid mediocre online gamer who enjoys getting back to his Mexican roots by eating breakfast tacos for dinner. With all these high level credentials, many may forget that this is NOT his first go around in the non-profit world of small opera companies here in Houston.

After serving on the board of Opera Vista for 6 years, Rene went dormant from this life; but like Luke being approached by Rey about entering back into the life, he said, “Eh, do I have to?” and Megan sai “Yes! You HAVE to!” So now his limited expertise is finally being used for something! Good thing he LOVES opera and beer!

Graphic & Scenic Design

Corey Phelps is a Houston-based designer who has always had a love for drawing and creating. He began drawing at a young age when he found out that being a Superhero wasn’t a real job, and so instead, drew himself as one. This love of drawing combined with a strong, introverted personality led him to harness the power of art and design as an architectural designer. After graduating from THE Ohio State University (yes, the “THE” is necessary) and Rice University, Corey has worked at several Houston-based firms, including Kinneymorrow, Huit-Zollars, and now Perkins & Will.

Corey’s love for buildings has not stopped him from designing and drawing other stuff on the side, however, so when Megan asked him to design the graphics for her company, he couldn’t wait to help! It probably helps that he likes beer and music, too!

Costume Design & Costumer

Mary Webber is a retired high school theatre teacher who has been costuming for more than fifty years. Over the years, she has become a master of costume and set design, crafting unique and memorable looks for the stage. Today, Mary owns her own costume and design business where she works with a select group of clients. Recent works by Mary include costume designs for the internationally acclaimed production of “La Boheme” at Opera in the Heights, “Lucia di Lammermoor”, “The Light in the Piazza” and “Rigoletto”, also with Opera in the Heights, “Cosi fan Tutte” at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music and “The Pirates of Penzance” for the Houston Gilbert and Sullivan Society. Although she is now retired from her days in the high school classroom, Mary’s legacy of excellence in costume design will live on.

Costume Design & Costumer

Shaun Heath is a designer, director and theatre artisan located in Houston, Texas. She began her career working with the Santa Fe Opera, then came back to Houston where she worked for local theatres and moved on to public education. Recent works by Shaun include costume designs for the internationally acclaimed production of “La Boheme” at Opera in the Heights, “Lucia di Lammermoor”, “The Light in the Piazza” and “Rigoletto”, also with Opera in the Heights, “Cosi fan Tutte” and “Sondheim on Sondheim” at the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music and “The Pirates of Penzance” for the Houston Gilbert and Sullivan Society. Her skill and experience have resulted in an impressive array of designs, both for large-scale productions and small, intimate groups.
