The Turn of the Screw
What do you get when you combine a ghost story with a nursery rhyme? Benjamin Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, that’s what. This opera makes you question what’s real and what’s a figment of your imagination… Are these ghosts haunting the house, or just your thoughts? Are they scheming to steal innocent children, or are they delusions of an overwhelmed mind?
At first everything seems clear: the children are good-natured, but isolated from society; the Governess is nervous, but up to the challenge; the house keeper is relieved…but why? What has happened here, in this house? To Flora and Miles? To Miss Jessel and Peter Quint, who once cared for those innocent children? If you can call what they did caring – perhaps it was their uncaring selfishness that led to their untimely deaths, not long ago.
The Governess sees the ghosts as clear as day, but do the children? Surely they are as fearful of these apparitions as she is, watching them desperately cling to a life that’s no longer their own. Surely they’re lying! Unless…are these the shadows of a troubled mind? Is she cracking under the pressure? Can she take another turn of the screw? Can the children?
